And for the record, doing a baidu search for "massage" does not find legitimate massage places - only escort services.

Good information to know. My T.A. asked if I would like to get a massage with her sometime. She came back from a massage with bruises. Are they all like this?

I have at least one friend in the city who goes fairly regularly. I have asked her for the info and will post here when I get it.

Also, I know someone else mentioned going for "blind massage" one time. I'll try to get that info too.

There's actually a lot of massage places in Wuxi... About 90% of the ones I've randomly walked into offer legit massage with no extra services. I have no idea how you guys are running into non-legit stuff. It ranges from 50 to 180 rmb for foot massage that includes a back rub.

Recently I've found one off Hubin road right across the Wuxi Broadcasting station which is 110 rmb for foot rub, but most foot includes rest of the body. Does pretty good wonders to my back.

Can you explain the setting to me? How does a foot rub turn into a back rub?

Also, is a massage here in any way similar to a massage back in the US? Will I have a private room? Do I disrobe? As my mandarin is very poor to bordering on non-existant, I like to have as much info on what to expect before I go as possible.

They soak your feet first in what I can assume only to be a tub full of water and antibacterial additives which will also make your feet smell nicer. During the soaking they give you back rub. You're still sitting up soaking feet while this is happening.

After this they'll massage your feet for an hour or so and move up to your legs. Then after that depending on service and/or massage place, they'll ask you to lie down for full body massage.

They offer massage uniforms (an oversized shirt and oversized pant with elastic waistband), you don't disrobe, but if you are wearing clothes such as jean pants or other material that make cause discomfort or make their job harder during the massage, it's recommended to change into the uniforms.

Yes you do have a private room.

I actually have no idea what a massage in US is like. All of my massage experiences have been in China.

I recommend you take a friend or co-worker with you as they'll ask you lots of service oriented questions like the pressure of the massage, if you want drinks, if you want snacks, or specific type of massage or specific area that you want massaged, etc.

Thanks DL. I plan on going with a friend next week. Her Mandarin is better than mine, but still "survival" level. *shrug*

I'm sure it'll be an experience.

What is some good vocab to know for a beginner in Mandarin when going to get a massage?

If someone could post a short list of the questions they would likely ask that would be awesome. So far I have had no luck finding someone to go with and am going to brave a spa by myself.

is "wo yao jiatian ya" and "wo yao jian ya" appropriate for asking them to massage harder or softer?

I have yet to find a place that does not understand the word massage, and they all have an english "Menu" at the front desk, but dont expect the massuse to know any english Smile so when it comes to vocab, all you need is the harder and softer, that is it.
The 2 questions you will get will be what would you like to drink as the first one, when in the room.
Second one is could you turn around please?
well..... there is offcourse if you go to the more sleasy ones where the girls wear small little uniforms, you probably should know the "very very godda" VIP massage they are trying to sell is the happy ending one ;0)
so a third question here would be "do you want me to massage .......?"

I finally went out for a massage at Guyang Tang (www.guyuantang.net).

This was a more western style massage place in that they had tables and didn't do the "feet soak, then get in the chair" routine I have heard described.

I went with a local who had never had a massage before and she was bit perturbed when they put us in the same room and told us to change into the PJ like outfits. And again when they sent her a male masseuse. She insisted on a woman.

My masseuse was a man and he was very rough with me. It was definitely a deep tissue massage and at times it was great, at other times it actually hurt, but he spoke enough English for me to tell him "not so hard" which only lasted about 30 seconds per comment.

Her massage, by the woman, she described and being much more gentle and relaxing. I believe my friend got a massage which was more Swedish in style and that is really what I am looking for. (next time I will ask for a female masseuse)

If you are into the rough deep tissue type of thing though, this place was nice, the price was reasonable (some online deal for something like 80 yuan for a 60 minute massage), and the masseuses speak a fair bit of English. I left the website so you could find the location and stuff on your own. I had a guide and probably couldn't find it again without her. Laughing

My wife goes to one beauty salon and she loves it. They offers good service and very professional. The body massage(including the back, belly, legs and arms)is about 80 yuan per time(If you pay a year's membership). It is not only works on acupuncture points but also on main and collateral. It is in Wanda area, is called 丝丽禾.The ground floor is the hair dresser shop. You can pay 58 for 3 try-on times.

Thanks for the tip, but I am a little confused. Why is is cheaper to try it than if you have the membership?

And, what does the membership get you besides 80 kwai massages?

The membership is for people who will use the massage store for a long time and spend much money - offers discounts on services.

I DON'T RECOMMEND IT as it's not cost effective for the casual user.

All the legit massage places I have went to in Wuxi have served my massage needs easily. Never had a problem getting what I wanted. HOWEVER I have had a few lazy masseuses .

Well Jeffery, where do you recommend for a good, relaxing, Swedish style massage with oil?

Josh I moved to Suzhou a few years ago and when I come to Wuxi these days it all seems different. What was before is something different now.
